How to Measure Blood Pressure Correctly
The following is based on the "722 principle" promoted by the Taiwan Hypertension Society, as a reference for home measurement. This is general health information and cannot replace professional medical advice.
What 722 means
- 7 days in a row
- 2 sessions each day, morning and evening
- 2 readings per session, about 1 minute apart, then take the average
Before measuring
- No smoking, food, alcohol, coffee, or tea for 30 minutes beforehand
- Do not exercise or bathe beforehand
- Empty your bladder first
Posture
- Sit in a chair with a backrest, with your back against it
- Keep both feet flat on the floor; do not cross your legs
- Rest quietly for 5 minutes, without talking
- Rest your arm on the table, relaxed and level with your heart
- The cuff should be snug enough that one finger fits underneath
While measuring
- Do not talk or move
- Take 2 readings about 1 minute apart, and record the average
When to measure
- Morning: after getting up, before medication and breakfast
- Evening: before going to bed
- One session each morning and evening, over several consecutive days
Other things to keep in mind
- Always use the same arm. If the two arms differ noticeably, always use the one with the higher readings
- Blood pressure monitors need to be calibrated periodically
- A single high reading does not mean you have hypertension — the trend matters more than any one number
